Top 10 Books On My Winter ’23-’24 To-Read List | TTT

Hello, everyone! I can’t believe how swiftly the holidays are approaching (or are currently amidst us for some). The holiday season also marks the weeks leading up to my birthday (two days before Christmas!) so it’s good times. It still has yet to snow where I’m at but I’m hopeful (despite all odds). Has it snowed where you live? I hope all is well!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

1. The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Technically I’ve already started The Secret History but I’m still early enough in it to consider it almost more on my TBR than “currently reading”. From what I’ve read so far, I’m already really loving it and look forward to finishing it soon!

2. The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides

Once again, this is one I’ve already started but am only a chapter into. I was hoping to have my reads this winter a little more seasonally apt but, unfortunately, mood reading will always take precedent for me over an established TBR.

3. Greywaren by Maggie Stiefvater (Dreamer Trilogy, #3)

Alright, this is the last book on the list that I’m technically currently reading! I started Greywaren a few months back but put it down because I’ve been absolutely procrastinating the completion of the final series in The Raven Cycle universe — I can’t bear to see it end. However, I’m thinking it’s about time I actually finish it.

4. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Initially, I wanted to pick up Gone Girl sometime during the fall but I didn’t properly prioritize it and it fell to the wayside. Now, I’m thinking maybe it’s even more fitting for the winter. I feel like thrillers tend to be well-suited for the winter, at least for my preference (such as The Silent Patient, maybe).

5. Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh

The present release of Eileen‘s cinematic adaptation makes me think now is as good a time as any to pick this one up! Additionally, it sounds like a good comp for a story I’m working on now, and I’ve been trying to find books in the same lane as it. (And it’s another in the thriller-ish sphere!)

6. Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson (The Reckoners, #1)

In my last Top Ten Tuesday post a few weeks back, I mentioned having not read anything by Brandon Sanderson yet. Consequentially, I received high praise and many recommendations for his work. I’m really looking forward to finally prioritizing it!

7. Rouge by Mona Awad

If I can manage to get my hands on a copy of Rouge in the next few months (given my library’s limited selection and the return of my self-established book-buying ban), I’ll be a happy girl! I’ve been looking forward to it since hearing about it earlier in the year, and would love to finally read it.

8. When Ghosts Call Us Home by Katya de Becerra

Described as being “Haunting of Hill House meets found-footage horror”, When Ghosts Call Us Home sounds right up my alley. Horror and family drama? Sign me up! This is another book I’ve been highly anticipating this year and hope to get to soon.

9. The Longest Autumn by Amy Avery

As a romance-leaning fantasy, this book differs a little from what I usually go for but–admittedly–the cover swayed me. On top of that, the blurb hooked me and it’s been on my mind since. Also, I know having “The Longest Autumn” on my winter TBR sounds strange but it’s not being released until next month so it’s with good reason!

10. Dead Things Are Closer Than They Appear by Robin Wasley

Similar to the last one on this list, Dead Things Are Closer Than They Appear won’t be published until the early months of 2024 and, also similarly, I’m highly anticipating it! With The Raven Boys and Buffy the Vampire Slayer as comps, I get the sense that it aligns pretty well to my interests.

Have you read or do you plan on reading any of the books on this list? What is your winter TBR looking like? Do you like to cater your reads to the seasons or are you a pure mood reader? I’d love to hear your thoughts below!
