Down the TBR Hole #7 | Lots of Horror, A Few Thrillers, & Some Mixed Feelings

Hello, everyone! I have to admit I was at a little bit of a loss for what to post this week as all of my book-related time has been going towards inching along in the books I’ve been currently reading for weeks. However, cleansing my Goodreads “to-read” shelf is always a good idea especially considering my physical TBR is more than enough to keep me busy…

Down The TBR Hole is a meme created by lost in a story that revolves around cleansing your TBR of all those books you’re never going to read and sort through it all to know what’s actually on there.

From what I’ve seen, The Chosen and the Beautiful has met somewhat middling reviews, and I personally don’t care for The Great Gatsby at all (which this one is a retelling of). That being said, I think this could be a very interesting twist on it, so I’m going to keep on my list for now!

I’m not sure how I heard of Mika in Real Life and though it seems decently rated, I’ve not been reading as much contemporary/literary work lately, and I don’t know when I’d realistically get to it. For now, I’ll remove it from my list.

After reading and loving (with a little apprehension) The House in the Cerulean Sea, my interest in TJ Klune’s work was assuredly peaked. I’ve not gotten the chance to read Under the Whispering Door just yet but I’m definitely open to it! I’ll be keeping this one on my list.

I think I must’ve come across Thistlefoot via a review in the blogsphere a few years back. I’ve seen some mention of it a couple of times since then but have yet to actually pick it up for myself. It sounds like something I could see myself going for based on my current taste so I’ll keep it on my list!

Sometimes all it takes to convince me of a book is a random 5-star review which was the case with Winter in Sokcho. I’ve not heard too much about it since that review but I’d like to check it out. I’m keeping this one on my list!

I’m fairly conflicted about Just Like Home because it looks and sounds like something that’s right up my alley (I’m probably at least a little biased towards the cover because it reminds me of Rachel Harrison’s Black Sheep which was one of my top reads last year) but it has a 3.37 average rating on Goodreads. Eek. (Although that average has to do with more 3-star reviews than anything remarkably low.) If you’ve read this one, let me know what you thought! I’m going to tentatively keep it on my list to get to for now.

I first encountered the story of The Haunting of Hill House through Mike Flanagan’s fantastic mini-series and have also seen the novel itself well praised. I’m someone who always wants to read all the classic stories and though I tend not to get to them as often as I’d like, I’m still going to definitely keep this on my list!

I borrowed The Girls Are Never Gone from the library on a complete whim, and I can’t remember if I even started it before getting sidetracked and having to return it. Going with that track record, I’m not sure it’s one I’d prioritize in a lineup so I’m going to remove it from my list for now.

Magpie is a fairly different pick from what I usually go for — I do read a thriller on occasion but only on a rare one. The themes of motherhood definitely intrigue me but I’m not sure how soon I’ll pick this one up if ever. If you’ve read it, please let me know your thoughts. I’m open to reading it someday but am going to remove it from my list for now.

Similar to Magpie, Blackout is another thriller, and I’m not sure how I wound up on a kick of searching for thrillers but I’m sensing a pattern. Based on the reviews, my hopes aren’t all too high for it. Once more, if you’ve read this, I’d love to hear your thoughts! For now, I’m removing this one from my list.

Books Removed: 4
Books Kept: 6
Current TBR Count: 137 – 4 = 133

That wraps up this post! It was very interesting revisiting some of these titles as I’ve not heard/thought about a few in upwards of two years. A lot of interesting ones, even if I’m not sure I’ll personally get to them. This series really has been such a fun exercise! 🙂

Have you read any of the books on this list? If so, what did you think? Do you think there are any I should consider giving another chance? Or are there ones I shouldn’t bother with? I’d love to hear your thoughts below!
