Annual Library Book Sale Haul: 2024 Edition

Hello, everyone! I’m super excited to have the chance to put together this post because it means I’ve gotten to browse my local library’s annual book sale. As I’ve mentioned quite a lot since last year’s sale, it’s practically a holiday for me with how much I look forward to it each year. This year is no different! I also volunteered with the sorting and setup of books, and got a chance to pick out some books ahead of the rush which was very exciting.

Adult Fiction

Classics

  • On the Road, Jack Kerouac
  • Sula, Toni Morrison

Fantasy

  • The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss

Horror

  • Carrie, Stephen King
  • Misery, Stephen King

Mystery/Thriller

  • Sharp Objects, Gillian Flynn

Science Fiction

  • The Year of the Flood (MaddAddam, #2) by Margaret Atwood
  • The Heart Goes On (Positron companion), Margaret Atwood

The fantasy and horror sections are the first to thin once the sale actually starts, so I was able to snag the Stephen King ones from volunteering ahead of time, as well as The Name of the Wind. I’m really pleased about that because I’ve been searching for these titles for a while! The classics and science fiction were ones I got more on a whim. Sharp Objects seemed like a good one to pick up considering how much I loved Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl earlier this year!

YA & MG Fiction

Young Adult

  • Fairest (Lunar Chronicles, #3.5), Marissa Meyer
  • I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast is Me, Jamison Shea

Middle Grade

  • A Tale of Magic (A Tale of Magic, #1), Chris Colfer
  • Notebook for Fantastical Observations (The Spiderwick Chronicles companion), Tony DiTerlizzi & Holly Black

MG (Cont.)

  • Keeper of the Lost Cities (Keeper of the Lost Cities, #1), Shannon Messenger
  • The Mysterious Benedict Society (The Mysterious Benedict Society, #1) by Trenton Lee Stewart

I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast is Me is one I’ve been eyeing for quite a while now, so I was really excited to find it! I’ve also been gathering The Lunar Chronicles books little by little over the years, though I haven’t actually read any of them yet. Hopefully I can get to those soon! I’ve been reading The Spiderwick Chronicles books this year when I get a little slumpy which has sort of inspired me to maybe write a middle grade story of my own. Because of that, I’d been looking for The Mysterious Benedict Society and Keeper of the Lost Cities as research/comps and was very happy to find both of them! I’ve seen some debate lately about adults reading middle grade for personal enjoyment but, frankly, I’m of the persuasion that if it brings you any level of joy, you’re more than entitled to indulge it!

Nonfiction

  • Down and Out in Paris and London, George Orwell
  • Cameras in Narnia: How the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Came to Life, Ian Brodie
  • Myths and Folklore of Ireland, Jeremiah Curtin
  • Irish Fairy & Folk Tales, W.B. Yeats

All of the nonfiction books were ones I picked up on a whim. Even though I have yet to actually read any Celtic mythology or folklore, the idea of it is really intriguing to me so I’m always picking up volumes if I come across them. Anything by George Orwell seems like it’d be a good purchase, and since I love the Narnia books and movies so much, I was very interested in learning more about the production of the first movie!

Classics: 2
Fantasy: 5
Horror: 3
Mystery/Thriller: 2
Sci-Fi/Dystopia: 2
Nonfiction: 4
TOTAL: 18

Overall, this is actually a much smaller haul than I usually get from the sales. I didn’t get to browse ahead of time so much and then I ended up going on the second day of the sale rather than the first — big mistake if I wanted to score any hotter titles! That being said, though, I’m very pleased with everything I got, and I think it’s a blessing in disguise that I wasn’t able to get quite as many this time around. I’ve just started double-stacking books on my shelves, and I still don’t have the room I’d like, so, like I said, a blessing in disguise. And the sale’s not over, anyway, so we’ll see if I can’t resist a few more books!

Have you read any of the books on this list? What did you think of them? If not, are there any you’ve been meaning to get around to? Does your library hold book sales? I’d love to hear your thoughts below!
