The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo | Book Review

When I first came across this book, I had a good feeling about it but wasn’t going to get my hopes up too much because for quite a while now, I’ve found that not much holds my interest anymore. HOWEVER. This most certainly did.

I don’t even know where to begin besides saying how much I truly loved reading this. I love the concept of writing in poems, the chosen structure to portray this story is so intriguing and the story being told is so compelling. It’s so interesting to read not only about but from the point of view of a main character such as this one. Her fire towards others yet how small she feels when alone is such an interesting concept to read and learn about while reading. There’s a specific voice that it’s being told from–the character in such a personal, individual way having it be written as she’s writing it herself–and because of that, it draws you in and you really feel for her and every emotion she goes through with all the situations she finds herself in. Personally, I relate to a lot of her struggles (on a smaller scale I will say, but I understand to a point nonetheless) and it’s so nice being able to relate so easily to the character, it draws the feelings and emotions out of the reader while they’re exploring more regarding the character and her story.

I really can’t even begin to assess this from a very comprehensive or technical point of view because it just moved me to a point that it fogs my logical thought process in a way and I absolutely love that. I couldn’t bear putting the book down because I was so easily drawn in and it was really quite difficult to resist the urge to just sit and read the day away.

Personally, I absolutely loved this novel and the way the author chose to tell the story and I feel like I want to meet her face to face and thank her for this. I appreciated this book and I have to say that I believe this will be a favorite of mine and is currently my favorite novel of the year.
