The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis: #2 and Second Best

For the majority of the time I spent rereading this, I thought I’d begin this review by saying: “Let me first apologize for this absolutely horrid take.” Then I was to follow the disclaimer with one of the following options…

FINISHED READING – 2015
STARTED READING – September 16, 2021

Rating: 4 stars

1. What is there to be said about this book that hasn’t been said already? Maybe that the Magician’s Nephew will always reign supreme in my mind. Don’t get me wrong, this story rocks, you go Clive Staples! This was the foundation for the entire world of Narnia so that alone deserves all the respect. And the 2000s film franchise based off of this idea would’ve never made tiny me fall in love with Skandar Keynes, so I thank you for your service.

2. This is not the fault of the book–more the fault of myself–but I cannot go a single page without thinking of the 2005 film adaptation and wishing I could be watching that instead of reading this. I’m sorry, Mr. Clive Staples, sir. I can pour myself a big cup of hot cocoa for my viewing of a big movie to pay a miserably disrespectful homage to your words.

While my 2000s child complaints still stand somewhat true, the last chapter or so worked their magic, giving off that warm, cozy nostalgia that everyone promises, and I couldn’t bear giving this a three-star rating like I’d been planning. It’s a classic for a reason, kids! (And my favorite Narnia book wouldn’t exist without this one, so it deserves credit for that alone.)

What’s your favorite Narnia book, and why? Are there any movies you find better than the book they’re based on? Which ones? Share your thoughts below!

  1. […] This is a classic and a reread for me. It feels at least a little bit sacrilegious to put this so low on the list given its influence and actual place in literature, but we’re all familiar enough with it that it almost seems a little bit trite to put it too high. It’s great, and we love it, and we’ll put it in a place to save some space for some other things. […]
