My opener pretty much sums up all of my thoughts, honestly. I’ve come to the conclusion that I am an absolutely weak-in-the-knees, goofily-grinning sucker for the found family trope. This series is, I think, a poster child of this idea and I am so fully here for it. How it took me so long to get around to this series is beyond me.

Ronan was a very much meh character for me throughout the first book. And I’ll admit it, practically none of my attention was on Gansey in the first one either. My heart belonged to Adam Parrish alone (with Blue and Noah lingering on the edges of my vision and focus). Going into this second one, I didn’t have high expectations because there seemed like there was going to be a bit more focus on Ronan (of whom I was not a particular fan). I must say, it was never a true dislike, and if it were, I may not have come around to him in this second installment. However, this book absolutely changed that for me. Ronan was promoted a few levels and was replaced by the Grey Man. Sorry, Mr. Grey! I understand your significance to the story but like…boring…(also why on earth did no one care at all about this man’s profession. at all. like it was hardly a topic of conversation at all. that was weird)

My love for Adam grew deeper, and Blue and Noah too. Gansey took me by surprise in this one! That was nice — I get it now! I really do. Like, very truly. Most of all, I’ve grown to adore Ronan just the same as the rest. And, believe it or not, there’s a little tiny fiber in my heart where even Kavinsky lingers. I’m not saying it’s right, because it’s not, but it is simply not my choice. For what it’s worth, it’s a nuanced, slightly questionable/questioning fiber.

I’ve heard this series praised most for its implementation of the “Found Family” trope as well as the general atmosphere and feeling of the book’s world. I can attest to the reliability of both these things! If nothing else, this book has a delightfully motley crew just trying their best in funky magical forests and Latin talking-tree dream worlds. Honestly, what more could a reader need?

What are your thoughts on this series? Does it hold nostalgia like it does for many, or are you also just getting around to it? What’s your favorite installment and character(s) of the series, and why? Share your thoughts below! (Please note any spoilers with a warning at the beginning of your comment!)
