Hello, everyone! I hope you’re enjoying your respective holiday seasons! As the end of the year is swiftly approaching, I’ve been trying (and sort of failing) to catch up on my year-end rituals. This involved changing my Goodreads goal of fifty to forty (because at thirty-eight, fifty just isn’t going to happen) and slowly starting to develop a bookstagram a little more to have something new going on alongside the new year! Additionally, I wanted to get a few more blog posts out before 2023 ends — so here we are. 🙂
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
1. The Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, #6)
At first, I’d considered pre-ordering this book to receive it in time with everyone else but was on a bit of a book-buying ban. When I saw everyone getting their copies, though, I felt a little left out. Unable to bear the wait, I ordered it on the release date back in September. I mentioned my thoughts on it in my October-November reading wrap-up but, essentially, I really enjoyed it!
2. The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
The Virgin Suicides is actually just one from a pretty hefty book haul a few months back. As I’ve already detailed all of those books elsewhere, I’ve picked this one to represent the haul because it is the one I’m currently reading. It’s a bit slower paced than what I typically go for but I’m enjoying it presently! If I finish it before the end of the year, I’ll probably update my thoughts in my December wrap-up.
3-8. Assorted Lemony Snicket Haul
- Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can’t Avoid
- Who Could That Be at This Hour? (All the Wrong Questions, #1)
- When Did You See Her Last? (All the Wrong Questions, #2)
- Shouldn’t You Be in School? (All the Wrong Questions, #3)
- Why is This Night Different From All Other Nights? (All the Wrong Questions, #4)
- The Composer is Dead
Clearly breaking my book-buying ban, I took advantage of a children’s books sale on ThriftBooks last month. The plan had been to read several middle grade books I’ve been meaning to get to for a while to get closer to my Goodreads goal. So far, I’ve not gotten to any of the All The Wrong Questions books but quite enjoyed the quotes/philosophies collection, Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can’t Avoid, and the picture book, The Composer is Dead, with its companion music/audiobook CD. These were also mentioned in my last wrap-up.
9. Together We Rot by Skyla Arndt
I mentioned highly anticipating Together We Rot in my Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag, and I finally went ahead and got a copy last month. I’ve really been in the mood for horror fantasy books, particularly after reading Autumn Krause’s Before the Devil Knows You’re Here (one of if not my only five-star read of the year). If you know of anything similar to that horror fantasy vibe (especially with horror tied to nature), I’d love any recommendations!
10. Wand by Landra Jennings
I won Wand in a Goodreads giveaway this month and it came at such an apt time! While I’m enjoying The Virgin Suicides, it is a bit slower as I mentioned, so having a quicker secondary read is really beneficial for me. I’m thinking these two books will be the ones that get me to complete my adjusted reading goal for 2023!
Have you read any of the books on this list? If so, did you like them? Why, or why not? What are some of your most recent reads? I’d love to hear your thoughts below!

Together We Rot has such a gorgeous cover! And congrats on the Wand Goodreads win! I’ve been entering to giveaways for forever and have yet to win any lol.

The cover for Together We Rot is what initially caught my eye. 🙂 And thank you! I’ve won a few books over the years probably just because I tend to enter so many, lol. I find scrolling through the giveaways is an interesting way to learn about new books even if I don’t end up winning them (I think that’s actually how I heard about Together We Rot, although I did buy that one)!

I stopped reading Riordan years ago because the plots were formulaic, but the premise of this one sounds silly enough to give a shot. Yay for Lemony Snicket!!

I can see what you mean about them being a bit formulaic although I think the characters and overall tone of the books trumped that for me. I don’t know how the newest one plays into formulas and all, but I enjoyed it! And, yes, always a yay for Lemony Snicket! 🙂
