Hello, everyone! How is the new year treating you thus far? I’ve been very busy lately, so I’m finding it easy to get worn out quite quickly. My reading has been on the back burner a bit with this transition and many new developments in my personal life, but I do plan on making a good amount of time for it throughout the year.

The TTT prompt this week is actually meant to be releases for the first half of the year but I didn’t have enough so I decided to extend it to the whole year. I’m mainly trying to get a handle on my present physical TBR, anyway, so that’s where most of my focus is right now!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

1. Mercury by Amy Jo Burns

Publication Date: January 2, 2024

Technically, this one is already out but it’s a 2024 release that I’ve been highly anticipating so I think it fits! As will probably be a bit of a trend with this list, the cover is what snagged my attention for this one. I’m actually currently reading it and a chapter in; I’m enjoying it so far!

2. The Longest Autumn by Amy Avery

Expected Publication: January 16, 2024

This one has been on my radar for a while now and, again, the cover made this one a no-brainer for me. I believe it’s more romantasy-leaning which is a genre I’ve not really explored. For a while I was hesitant to try it out–I’ve never been much of a romance reader–but I’m willing to give it a chance!

3. Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum

Expected Publication: January 17, 2024

I love the idea of slice-of-life novels, and I’d like to read more of them! Some of my favorites fall under that category (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Catcher in the Rye, etc.), I think, so I’d like to seek out more. I also want to prioritize reading more diversely this year, and I’ve been meaning to read more translated fiction for a while now!

4. Dead Things are Closer Than They Appear by Robin Wasley

Expected Publication: February 13, 2024

I’m not sure how I heard about this book but when I saw The Raven Boys and Buffy the Vampire Slayer as comps, I was immediately sold. Of course–as is the trend here–the cover piqued my interest even further, and this is probably the one I’m most looking forward to this year!

5. The Reappearance of Rachel Price by Holly Jackson

Expected Publication: April 2, 2023

I read the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder books a few year back, and really enjoyed them (the first and third ones, particularly)! While I don’t go for mystery thrillers first, they tend to be good picks for me because I prefer going along for the ride rather than trying to figure out reveals ahead of time. I love the shock of a good (or even mediocre) plot twist.

6. The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo

Expected Publication: April 9, 2024

To be perfectly transparent, I’m sort of only half-excited for this new Leigh Bardugo release. I loved the Six of Crows duology and enjoyed the Shadow and Bone trilogy for the most part (we don’t talk about Siege and Storm) but Ninth House really just didn’t work for me. I tried it a couple different times but after 100 pages in and still not feeling hooked, I decided to DNF it (there’s still a slight chance I’ll try it again but it’s pretty slim at this point). I don’t have much of a proclivity for historical fiction but I’m going to give this one a shot!

7. I Was a Teenage Slasher by Stephen Graham Jones

Expected Publication: July 16, 2024

The only slasher I’ve consumed in book form is Kalynn Bayron’s You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight, and I unfortunately really did not enjoy it. It felt like a lot of wasted potential as well as perhaps just the wrong medium for it — maybe there’s a reason slashers work best as movies. Before I write slashers in novel form off entirely, though, I’d like to give other interpretations a chance, and this sounds like a good one to try out!

8. The Blonde Dies First by Joelle Wellington

Expected Publication: July 30, 2024

After reading and really enjoying Joelle Wellington’s debut, Their Vicious Games, I was more than willing to add her next book as “to-read” on Goodreads. While I think movies and books that try to do the meta/self-referential thing that Scream already did is a little hackneyed, I have faith in Wellington’s ability to pull it off. The darkly comedic and satirical tone that lurks beneath her debut was executed well enough that I think this could be really effective. I’m looking forward to it!

9. A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft

Expected Publication: September 17, 2024

Alright, this is the last time I’m going to make mention of this but — that cover! It’s too gorgeous for me to say anything other than, “yes, please!” On top of that, it’s gothic and dark academia and rivals-to-lovers so I think the decision really made itself. Not to mention elements of folklore and a setting in nature…this one sounds like a real winner to me.

10. Wrath of the Triple Goddess by Rick Riordan

Expected Publication: September 24, 2024

As Percy Jackson and the Olympians is really what saved my reading year in 2023, I’m very much looking forward to this newest installment! I enjoyed The Chalice of the Gods thoroughly, and I think there’s a good chance that this revamp of the series will sustain its quality.
