Hello, everyone! If you’ve followed my last several posts, then you may recall how frequently I’ve lamented the lack of snow in my area. Well, we finally got some! I made my “Mr. Tumnus’s Sugar-Topped Cake” in celebration this morning. 🙂
I meant to do a Top Ten Tuesday post this week but when I saw the prompt was “Bookish Goals for 2024”–something I already covered in December–I decided to go for a mid-month check-in instead.
Although it’s already halfway through January, I’ve unfortunately yet to actually complete a book. Life’s been kind of hectic lately, and in trying to keep up with all of the other goals I’ve set for the year, reading has unfortunately faltered to the backburner. I’ve been updating my recently instated “media consumption journal”, though, as I’ve been going for mostly TV shows in my free time of late.
TV Shows

After checking out the first season of The X-Files from the library an embarrassing number of times without actually finishing it, my dad kindly gifted me a DVD boxset for my birthday last month. I’ve cumulatively watched through 01×19, and am anticipating finishing up the season soon!
As a sort of birthday gift to myself with the new Percy Jackson and the Olympians series coming out, I got a Disney+/Hulu bundle which really opened the doors to many more options. I’ve been keeping up with the show weekly, and have also started Normal People (up through 01×08 presently), It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (through 01×04), and Boy Meets World (through 01×05).
On Netflix, I finished the eleventh season of Shameless after starting the show in August ’23 (there was some major TV binging these last several months…), and started season six of This is Us!
Movies
Historically, I’ve not actually been that much of a movie person. In the last year or so, though, I’ve started using Letterboxd more, and that’s kind of encouraged me to broaden my horizons in that sphere of media. So far, though, I’ve only watched one movie: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in honor of the first snow day of the season (a personal tradition of mine)!
Books
As previously mentioned, I’ve also yet to finish a book this year. I have been reading, though, and my currently reading pile is getting a little out of hand.
Currently Reading

Of all of these that are considered “currently reading”, I’ve only picked up the latter half at any point during this month. I’m still procrastinating finishing Greywaren, and have been putting off The Secret History until I feel I have enough mental energy to focus on it. More Applachian Folk Stories is unfortunately the sort of book that I really want to have had read without having to actively read it.
I think there’s a good chance I’ll finish Wand, Mercury, and Gone Girl all by the end of this month. Hopefully, I’ll finish all six of these before moving onto the rest of my winter TBR although I’m sure I’ll start a bunch of books that I’ll take weeks or months to finish (ahhhhh). I am hoping to finish all of them, though, and avoid having them fall into the recesses of my “half-reading” collection (which is, unfortunately, ever-growing).
Light DNFs / Saving for Later:

It really pains me to do this but I do fully intend on finishing All’s Well! I just have to move it off my currently reading list because it’s been sitting there for over a year, and I haven’t picked it up in months. I’ve been procrastinating finishing it (although I’m at 68%) because I’d prefer reading it physically but I only have it on my kindle right now. Once I get a physical copy, though, I do plan on completing it!
That wraps up my mid-month check-in! I wish I had more to report but this is where I’m at right now. I’ve just started trying out audiobooks again for the first time in a while, and I’m looking forward to seeing if it’s conducive for me in my life. The odds are seeming like it may be a helpful way to get me through books when I’m feeling a little slumpy — I’ll update on how it goes!
Have you read any of the books on this list? Seen any of the TV shows/movies? Did you like them? Why, or why not? How’s your reading month going? I’d love to hear your thoughts below!
Tricky month for me too, I’ve started a bunch but only finished the ones I started in December! But I recently started The Winter’s Promise and I’ve zoomed through the first half in just a couple days, so that bodes well

It’s so nice finding a book that clicks! I hope you enjoy it all the way through. 🙂 I’m slowly feeling things picking up also–especially with reincorporating audiobooks into my reading habits–so I’m hopeful for the rest of the month!
